On January 19th, the Anchorage School District brought its first wave of students back into the classroom. Katherine Porter was one of the first teachers back with them. She teaches special education study skills at East Anchorage High School.
ATMI youth health reporter Annika Wolfe spoke with Ms. Porter about what it was like returning to in-person classes, the difficulties teaching remotely, and how she and other teachers are working to keep students safe.

For those that have had and recovered from the coronavirus, the symptoms can really vary. Some people are asymptomatic and may not even know they have the virus. But others, like Libby Pederson, had a very different experience altogether.
Libby is a born and raised Alaskan who has been teaching special-ed for twenty years in Anchorage. She spoke with ATMI producer Danielle DuClos to talk about her unique experience with Covid.

While the lives of youth are greatly altered by the pandemic, we are much safer from it than many other demographic groups. So today we’re shifting gears to talk about one of the most vulnerable groups: the elderly.
In this episode, we hear from Rebecca Parker, executive director of the Anchorage Senior Activity Center. ATMI senior producer Quinn White spoke with her about how the facility has found ways to work with their clientele remotely, how isolation is affecting seniors’ mental health, and how we can all safely help our loved ones.

We’ve talked a lot about remote schooling on this podcast and how difficult it can be for teachers and students. But one thing we haven’t really covered is how all this isolation affects youth, and how school mental health resources are trying to meet those needs.
In this episode, we hear from Cycelia McMorris, a school counselor at Hanshew Middle School. She spoke with ATMI senior producer Quinn White about how the pandemic is affecting youth’s mental health, the challenges of connecting with students remotely, and building up a strong support system and community for all students.

Sean Schubert is part of the workforce development team at King Technical High School in Anchorage. As Schubert describes it, he helps young men and women to take that next step in high school into whatever awaits them, whether that be college, trade school, the military, or a job.
But with the pandemic causing schools to switch to online learning, Schubert’s role has shifted a bit. He’s also leading classes on American sign language, philosophy, business management, English, and African-American studies. But students still come to him for guidance.
ATMI senior producer and King Tech alum, Daisy Carter spoke with Schubert to discuss the challenges of working with students remotely, added stress that youth are experiencing right now, and advice for young people preparing to enter the workforce.
She was joined by new ATMI producer Zach Lovell, who is also an alum of King Tech. They spoke over Zoom on January 8th, 2021.

A few days before Thanksgiving 2019, Patrick Walker enlisted in the army. Shortly after basic training, a global pandemic began sweeping across the world. Currently Patrick is a combat medic, stationed in South Korea.
ATMI producer, and friend since high school, Ryan Danigole spoke with Patrick to talk about how the coronavirus precautions in the military and how South Korea's response compares to the U.S.

Ed Dodd and his wife purchased Classic Toys in 1998 from its original owners. It has been longstanding local business in the community that has seen generations of customers come through its doors.
Normally the holiday shopping season would be its most profitable time of the year. But when you add in a pandemic and city-wide mandates on businesses and local gatherings, it because increasingly difficult to keep a store like Classic Toys afloat.
ATMI senior producer Daisy Carter spoke with Ed to talk about how the pandemic has affected his business, how this holiday shopping season will be different, and the lasting support Anchorage residents have shown Classic Toys.
