ATMI believes the teen perspective is valuable and under-represented. The Alaska Teen Media Institute is a program under the umbrella of Spirit of Youth, 501 (c)(3).

This January, Alaska saw its highest spike in Covid cases due to the Omicron variant. Testing facilities were overwhelmed and hospitals remained strained.
To learn more about Omicron, ATMI producer Grady Cutchins sought out a clinical pharmacist. And he didn’t have to go far. His father, Coleman Cutchins, is a board-certified clinical pharmacist working with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.
They sat down in the Cutchins household to talk about Omicron, how it differs from past variants, its effects on vaccine hesitancy, and what could be next in the pandemic.
They spoke on January 30th, 2022.

Sierra Fischer has been a flight attendant for a major airline for nine years. So she was working when Covid-19 first hit the United States.
ATMI producer Madison Knutson spoke with Fischer about her experiences as a flight attendant during the pandemic, working with noncompliant passengers, and the recent holiday travel season that had thousands of flight cancellations and delays worldwide.

Joshua Meals is a clinical nurse manager at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He oversees an acute care nursing floor with a staff of over 60 nurses. While they don’t treat patients with Covid, they still feel the ripple effects of how the pandemic disrupts the hospital.
ATMI producer Ada Bjorkman spoke with Meals about managing the acute care unit during the pandemic, how staffing shortages impact the nurses and patients, and how he works with his team to make sure they continue to provide the best care possible during this stressful time.

Maps are a fundamental part of our daily lives. From GPS apps, to tracking the weather, to keeping up with the spread of Covid-19 around the world. So for this episode we’re going to talk about cartography and how it is deeply entwined with our lives and our history.
Our guest is John Cloud, a historian of cartography working for the Arctic Studies Center of the Anthropology Department at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Much of his work involves the history of mapping Alaska.
ATMI producer Grady Cutchins spoke with him about the necessity of historic maps, the role of maps in pandemics, and what is lost when technological advancements change the way we interact with the world around us.

If you went to the movies this past holiday season, odds are you saw the movie we’re talking about today: Spider-Man: No Way Home. In its opening weekend it grossed two hundred and sixty million dollars. That’s the second highest debut in history.
For this episode our ATMI film critics discuss this movie phenomenon starring Tom Hollands as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. And more so than other episodes of this series, they go deep on spoilers. But let’s be real. You’ve probably already seen the movie at least once.

David Reamer is a historian whose focus in recent years has been unearthing Alaska’s complicated and curious past. He writes a weekly column for the Anchorage Daily News about the state’s history, covering a wide range of topics that include landmark restaurants, unsolved crimes, and Anchorage’s most famous horse.
ATMI senior producer Quinn White spoke with Reamer about his work. He talks about Anchorage’s history with housing discrimination, why the city looks the way it does, and some of the stranger tidbits of Alaska’s past.

It’s the winter holidays, and for some people that means it’s time for Christmas movies. So we thought we’d have a Film Club holiday special and talk about one of the most divisive Christmas movies of them all: Die Hard.
Our youth producers got together on Zoom to talk about the Bruce Willis-starring action movie, some of them having only just seen it for the first time.
They debate the age-old question: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? But also talk about what makes a good Christmas movie, how Die Hard holds up decades later, and their favorite parts about it.

When the Pfizer vaccine was approved for children ages 5 and older, Laura Norton-Cruz was relieved to be able to get her two young kids vaccinated.
And she knew the perfect place to take them; her mother’s birthing center where they were holding vaccine clinics. To make the experience even more comfortable for the kids, Laura’s father, a retired pediatric radiologist, administered the shots.
ATMI producers Ada Bjorkman and Madison Knutson spoke to all five family members to hear their different perspectives on the experience.
They also discuss communicating with other parents about getting the vaccine for their children, how misinformation disrupts the community, and what the kids are most looking forward to once they are fully vaccinated.

For this episode, we will be talking about the new science fiction film, Dune. It is an adaptation of a novel by Frank Herbert that was originally published in 1965.
The book has a rocky history in adaptations. There is a film version from 1985 and a miniseries from 2000, both widely regarded by fans as failures in accurately bringing the story to the screen. In this new version, director Denis Villenueve decided to split the novel into two feature films, the second one is due in 2022.
Our youth film critics got together on Zoom to share their reactions to the movie. They also talk about white savior narratives in media, the complex politics of the movie, all while trying to avoid spoilers from the second half of the book.

On October 28th, 2021 Anchorage Daily News reporter Morgan Krakow learned that an article she was credited as writing was circulating Twitter. Except she didn’t actually write it. It wasn’t a real story.
The tweet, which had thousands of likes and retweets, used an image that looked convincingly like the ADN website and had Krakow’s byline.
The headline read “Virginia man arrested for having Minecraft worlds that were the exact replicas of classified US military bases.”
ATMI senior producer Quinn White spoke to Krakow about getting caught up in this fake news story, how seemingly innocuous misinformation can contribute to more harmful spreading of lies, and how the pandemic has altered her career as a journalist.
